Lady Gaga’s buoyant rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” reminded me of the importance of performing our history, of retuning the flawed cultural scripts we inherit to meet our present needs. She briefly remade the anthem – a frustrating melody, a racist artifact, a canned performance of patriotism – into a celebration of the fact that we made it to this day, to these freshly embattled ramparts.
